(Jazz musician CECIL THOMAS and his A&R man SAL DANZER are backstage in a small club after one of CECIL’s sets.)

CECIL: I was good, godammit.

DANZER: (Hostily.) You’re losin’ ‘em Cec. You goddamn lost ‘em out there. You’re getting farther and farther out there every goddamn night.

CECIL: What the *&%$*# are you talking’ about?

DANZER: Musically speaking, you were a piece of *&%$*#. A piece of musical *&%$*#.

CECIL: What’s that supposed to mean?

DANZER: You’re out in the ozone, man. They aren’t listening to you. They’re talkin’ to one another. They’re discussing politics.

CECIL: Shut the *&%$*# up.
