More than a century ago, the Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railway began a partnership that would forever change the way Americans view the Southwest, its Native peoples, and Native American art.  Mary Jane Colter, the Harvey Company’s Chief Architect and Designer, designed Phantom Ranch, Hopi House, and six other buildings at the Grand Canyon, along with a host of other buildings, including her crown jewel, La Posada in Winslow, Arizona.

In June of 2009, a cast of nine, portraying 16 roles, premiered Mick Shelton’s new play, Fred and Mary: An Unconventional Romance, at La Posada as a staged reading. Spanning the years 1876 through 1958, the quasi-historical play centers on the life of Mary Jane Colter and her relationship with the Fred Harvey Company. Playwright and cast are now seeking funding for a full production of the play during Arizona’s Centennial Celebration. You can help by making Fred and Mary a part of your 2011 or 2012 theatrical season or by making a tax-deductible donation toward its production. Please contact the playwright: micki@mickishelton.com.
