June 25th—June’s edition of Tomorrow’s Theater Tonight takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Wild Iris Coffee House and features a reading of Micki Shelton’s newest play, Fred and Mary: An Unconventional Romance. Spanning the years 1876 through 1958, the quasi-historical play centers on the life of Mary Colter who designed Phantom Ranch, Hopi House, and six other buildings at the Grand Canyon, along with a host of other buildings; and her relationship with Fred Harvey, who, along with his prim waitresses, dubbed “The Harvey Girls,” have been credited with civilizing the West. Together, their reverence for and promotion of Indian art and culture laid the groundwork for what the Southwest is today. But did their collaboration help to preserve Native culture or destroy it?
September 28th—The Prescott Fine Arts Association has chosen to include a staged reading of Micki’s play Medea’s Ghost as part of their new Reader’s Theatre Series, premiering this fall. Medea’s Ghost is being directed by Ellen Bailey, formerly of Pasadena Playhouse. The rehearsed reading will take place as a matinee at the Prescott Downtown Library, 215 E. Goodwin Street, Prescott. More info to come.
Stay tuned for readings of Fred and Mary: An Unconventional Romance around Arizona in Fall, 2008. The readings will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Mary Colter’s death.
