Senior Textbook Writer/Editor — 4-12 educational materials for outside development houses on projects for major educational publishers—including National Geographic School Publishing, McDougal Littell, Harcourt, Ginn and Co., Scholastic, Scott Foresman, Houghton Mifflin, CTB/McGraw-Hill, Oxford University Press, Computer Curriculum Corporation, D.C. Heath, Goodyear Books, and Weekly Reader. Work includes writing supplementary readers, pupil pages, and teacher-support materials in reading, language arts, social studies and science—including ESL, literature, spelling, vocabulary, writing, grammar, library and study skills, testing, multiple intelligences, and environmental awareness. Many projects include creating cross-curricular and multicultural activities, extension activities for multiple developmental levels, activities for family involvement, and character development. Senior EditorHampton-Brown Company (now National Geographic School Publishing/Hampton-Brown), Carmel, California. Part of a team who developed two new ESL Language Arts programs: High Point for middle schools, and Avenues for K-5. Responsibilities included overall program design; writing specs for activities in student edition, teachers’ edition, and ancillary materials; guiding writers as they developed activities; rewriting, editing, and proofreading final manuscripts and pages; consultant on educational theory, literature, and grammar.

 

1985—1986

Documentation Coordinator —Pro-Peace, Los Angeles, CA. Wrote and produced Pro-Peace Profile, principal fundraising tool for the L.A.-based non-profit group. Edited and coordinated production of all print materials. Press contact.

 

1974—1981

Senior Editor —Career Publishing, Inc., Orange, CA Designed and wrote course materials including the 450-page text: Trucking: A Truck Driver's Training Handbook. Responsible for taking manuscripts through all stages of production: acquisition, development and book design, direction of authors and assistant editors, production coordination and product support.

 

1968—1972

English Teacher — Rotheram High School, County Borough of Luton, Bedfordshire, England; Portola Middle School, Orange, California. Drama Club Advisor— Portola Middle School, Orange, California, directed student-written play, Bits and Pieces, and the play-within-the-play from Midsummer Night’s Dream.

 

ADDITIONAL WRITING AND EDITING EXPERIENCE

Editing/Writing —Writing: Original stories and poetry for Houghton Mifflin, Scott Foresman, Oxford University Press, Scholastic, McCormick-Mathers, and Educational Insights. A bimonthly newspaper column for children on conflict resolution, peacemaking, and the environment (1984-1996). Adult vocational training materials, organizational newsletters, newspaper and magazine articles.
