(From the beginning)

(BEATRICE sits in a wheelchair. There may be a

vital-signs monitor. AGNES enters using a walker.

Both are hard of hearing.)

 

 

                                                                   AGNES

(Shouts.) I came to give you trouble.

 

                                                                BEATRICE

You’re too old to give me trouble.

 

                                                                   AGNES

What?

 

                                                                BEATRICE

I said you’re too old to give me trouble.

 

                                                                   AGNES

If you expect to be heard, speak up!

 

                                                                BEATRICE

I said you’re too old to give me trouble!

 

                                                                   AGNES

You don’t have to repeat yourself.

 

                                                                BEATRICE

Put in your hearing aid Aggie!

 

                                                                   AGNES

I don’t—

 

                                                                BEATRICE

It’s in your purse!

 

                                                                   AGNES

Oh that’s right. 

 

(AGNES finds it and puts it in her ear.)

It wouldn’t hurt for you to put in yours.

 

                                                                BEATRICE

Oh for goodness sakes! 

 

(BEATRICE finds hers and puts it in.)

 

                                                                   AGNES

Well, have you accomplished it yet?

 

                                                                BEATRICE

Accomplished what for God’s sake! You are so obtuse.

 

                                                                   AGNES

What we talked about last time.

 

                                                                BEATRICE

You expect me to remember what we talked about last time? That was months ago.

 

                                                                   AGNES

A week. It was a week ago. I wouldn’t stay away a month when you’re—

 

                                                                BEATRICE

Don’t be melodramatic. I’m not dying.

 

                                                                   AGNES

Well if you’re not dying, you’re sure running up one heck of a bill. You should tell them out there!
